It's too hot to cook. It's way too hot to use the oven. I thought about toast and decided it wasn't worth it. Boiling water is ok in the morning, when the apartment is relatively cool, or late at night after the air conditioner has been going for a few hours. I'm still looking for food I won't have to cook.

I have a new food processor. (Thank you!) Someone who loves me gave it to me after seeing what it does to my hands to use a knife for significant cutting. (He didn't see me using my big grater or my mortar and pestle, because I don't even try anymore.) Left to my own devices, I might not make anything more elaborate than iced tea until the temperature breaks. But company may inspire me to impersonate a civilized turtle, tidying the apartment (insofar as it can be tidy with the mattress on the living room floor and the bedroom surrendered to the oppressive heat), and make nice meals. I am expecting people over at least twice before July 10th, so there is relatively little chance of hell freezing over, or even of my apartment reaching an unassisted room temperature below 30C. Thus: nice meals that can be prepared with minimal application of heat.

Can anyone recommend recipes for cold soups? Interesting salads? I have the aforementioned food processor, which slices, chops, grates, and purees. I also have a microwave oven. (Thanks again!) I have a supermarket in easy reach, and there's a middle eastern grocery downstairs with a remarkable variety of olives and yogurt. They also sell reasonably good Quebecois pita, but I have to go to Cambridge or Somerville for decent "real bread."
