I am looking for a dentist who is very experienced with fitting NTI mouthpieces. They are very different from other kinds of mouthpieces intended to prevent tooth-grinding, in that they try to prevent pressure and don't try to correct the alignment of the jaw. I used to have one that helped my headaches quite a bit. It needed a lot of adjustment, and the dentist who made it for me was wonderful about correcting the fit over and over until it was perfect. Unfortunately, he moved to Maine.
The nice people who sell the NTI templates to dentists, and teach them how to fit them to teeth, are happy to recommend local dentists who can provide them. Unfortunately, they don't distinguish between a dentist who has done thousands of fittings and has a good "feel" for how it works and how important it is to get it right to the micron, and a dentist who took the "how to use NTI templates" course last week and thinks the whole thing is kind of silly (but why not try it if it might bring in patients?) Last September, I lost my old NTI in Montreal. Last October, I got a new one from a different dentist, who assured me that the fit was "good enough" when I complained about it. It's better than nothing, I think. But it's never worked quite right. With my difficulty driving, it's really not feasible to drive to Maine to see the old dentist I trust. Besides, it's silly. People in Maine come to Boston when they need specialized medical care.
There are tens of thousands of dentists in range of the MBTA. A fair number of them have experience with NTIs, but I don't know how to find one who is really *good* with the NTI, other than by personal recommendation. Any suggestions?
