birthday cake!
Nov. 10th, 2019 06:39 pmToday is Redbird's birthday. Yay, Redbird! (I think we're supposed to write it
redbird? I've been out of touch lately.) I made her a birthday cake.
I found a spice cake with roasted apples on Smitten Kitchen that was used as a birthday cake, decorated with a map of the NYC subway done in colored frosting. That seemed promising, because my sweetie is such a transit geek. (And the MBTA is so much simpler than the MTA I thought I had a chance of drawing it on a sheet cake.) It turns out that the local supermarket is happy to sell me little tubes of colored icing in red, blue, or green (or various colors I don't want), but not orange or yellow. They don't even have orange or yellow food coloring.
I'm not sure if decorating the cake with a map of the MBTA and leaving off the Orange Line would make it wrong, or just painfully accurate. Between that uncertainty, and my uncertainty about trying to make a vegan cream cheese or buttercream recipe for the background...I just used the cinnamon glaze I discovered this spring and been putting on everything that seems to call for frosting since then.
Of course, birthday cakes need candles. The pictures at Smitten Kitchen showed a birthday cake for a 3 year old, so candle placement was simpler than for us. But we make do. I sang the Inchworm song before Happy Birthday.

There is not actually a picture inside the cut tag. There is a picture on my phone and I can't figure out how to get it to dreamwidth. It's not that important. 6 blue birthday candles, some of them lit, on a rectangular cake with brown frosting.
