I think I may have sounded accusatory: I didn't mean to, and I am so very sorry if I did. I intended to express an elegiac sense that this dude is encrusted in his assumption of his centrality in the universe, his identity with Reality, and fossilized.
You are also quite right that he can be changed to the point of keeping his miserable thought habits to himself. And that surely does reduce the contagion.
