If one is trying to fit a large object inside somewhere, the dimensions of the opening are really important. Arguably, it's more important than the total available volume. Despite several series of really vivid lessons on the subject, I forgot all about it at a critical time this afternoon.

You see, way back when I first moved to East Arlington, I realized we were trying to fit the combined kitchen gear of 3 enthusiastic cooks into a small kitchen with no pantry. Tools were stored or were given away, appliances was lent or stored, furniture was lent out. My kitchen cart, which my brother had given me as a wedding present, went to darkrosetiger, because her kitchen had a dire shortage of shelves and counter space. Now that she's moving to a shared household, her new kitchen is going to have an even more dire shortage of floor space, so she's returning the cart with interest.

This afternoon, I told my former housemates in East Arlington (they don't live there anymore, but that's where we were...picnic at Spy Pond) that my time was constrained by the need to get to Darkrose's place and back before dark.
"Were you planning on having me drive you?"
"No, I can do it myself."
Hah! Famous last words. I drive a Focus, which has fairly impressive amounts of cargo space if one wants to fill the thing up with paperbacks or marbles or something easily packable.

I do not drive comfortably, but I made it safely. Once there, I got the microwave downstairs. And the cart downstairs. The cart didn't fit into through the trunk opening, and it's not designed to be taken apart in ways that make it significanly smaller (and leave it fit for reassembly.) It's not noticably compressible, and lube wasn't going to help. We did try another orfice, going for the side door, but it was just as hopeless there. I had to call my chosen family to come rescue me with a truck.

I'm so glad I have friends who help me out of awkward and embarassing situations like this. They're so much more comfortable than the kind of friend who just want to get you *in* that kind of a pinch.
