Northern New Jersey is reputed to have a good network of commuter railroads and public transit. Unfortunately, they don't make it easy for Someone From Away to figure out options for getting from Here to There. This may be perfectly obvious for locals, but is

a workplace a person could reasonably commute to by public transit? Or is it out in the sprawling lands where everybody has to drive?
I'm willing to walk up to 2.5 miles from the bus stop or train station, if I'm walking along roads that aren't pedestrian-hostile. But I'd need bus or train service from residential areas (preferably from several different residential areas, from which a person might also travel to NYC without outrageous difficulty) so I can go to work in the morning and go home in the late afternoon or evening. Knowing the place is a mile from the train station would be of limited value, if the only trains were at noon and midnight.
