yesterday at the dentist
May. 21st, 2008 11:25 amConsidered by themselves, dentists' chairs are usually pretty comfortable. Sure, uncomfortable stuff sometimes happens in connection with them, but the chair is usually great. (And this is probably weird, but I find the lead-lined blankie they use for x-rays a positive comfort as well.) I went to the dentist yesterday so he could do what dentists consider very minor restorative work. And my arms fell asleep! Both arms, from the shoulder.
I first noticed my arms were kind of uncomfortable when I was just sitting there waiting for the dentist to finish with another patient. I was just reading an e-book (which the dental assistant referred to as my "game," because all the handheld electronics that don't play music or make phonecalls are games, right?), and my hands were feeling disconnected. I put the book down to be polite to the dentist when he did the novocaine injection, and didn't really feel up to picking it up again. Even though the whole point of an e-book is not being heavy.
After 10 minutes of just lying there with my arms at my sides, both arms were numb to the shoulders. It was *great*. I'm sure it would have been terribly inconvenient if I'd needed to use my hands for anything, but they didn't hurt at all. I slept through most of the actual dental work. I couldn't feel my hands! That can make anything more comfortable than my bed, where I seem to have been accumulating way too much sleep debt lately.
