new clothes
May. 19th, 2008 03:27 pmThe overlap between my mother's idea of appropriate clothes, and clothes I might actually be willing to wear, is kind of limited. But there are some nice things within those constraints. She sent me a box of clothes, including things we had shopped for when I was in Michigan, and "I thought you might need one of those, too. And it's so nice."
I've washed all the new clothes that are even close to washable, but some of them still stink. I don't understand it. When the label says a shirt is silk, or a sweater is silk and nylon, why does it smell like rayon? I can't assess the smell of new clothes, because they always start off smelling so strongly of the store, or of whatever cleaners and starches were used before the store put them out. But regular washing does not seem to help. I tried soaking in a baking soda solution, and that helped a little but did not fix the whole problem. (Besides, hand-washing is not the best thing in the world for my hands.) I got some Oxy Clean, but that seems to introduce an unpleasant smell of its own.
