This is not the future I expected, back in the 20th century. Yes, I thought I might have an alternative lifestyle that my mother would disapprove of. But I didn't expect she'd disapprove of my getting vaccinated against contagious diseases. Or getting part of my electricity from wind and solar.

She doesn't understand about being bisexual and polyamorous, but she is ok with "these wonderful people are very important to me, and I am living with them now." I don't expect her to object to my rainbow-striped airgami because of the rainbow stripes. She just thinks it's dangerous to wear any mask and I should stop.

You're right! She actually sent me an article about graphene oxide last year. I'm trying to get her to shovel out a corner where I can look respectable enough for an hour of teaching, when I visit next month. (The hoarding is a big problem.) It turns out that the only space that can work around the hoarding has no wifi. But if I had built-in 5G, that might not be a problem.

Oh, dear, how very difficult -- and unexpected, I can see that.

It feels unexpected...but when I think about it logically, I realize that I should have seen it coming. Some of it, anyhow. It's not like I ever expected her to accept my lifestyle. I just expected her to pitch a fit about me showing up to a bar mitzvah in crocs and no makeup, looking fat and refusing to drink wine. (Or whatever it was, before crocs were invented.) She accepted the not drinking wine some years back, and the rest is just fading into the background.

I think you are having a similar experience to many. I'm pretty sure I expected society at large to believe one set of conspiracy theories, but it turns out they decided to play "yes, and" instead.
