I approve of my rain gear fastening with velcro.
I approve of the case for my smartphone fastening with velcro.
I understand why my dress shoes fasten with velcro, even if I don't actually approve.

Velcro is really incredibly hard on dress-up clothes, ya know? I was going to say something like "especially summer clothes" or "especially women's clothes," but abrasion-resistant clothes just aren't very formal.

I don't believe I have ever seen dress shoes that fashion with velcro, for this very reason. I am intrigued! And now wondering whether in fact I have seen quite a lot of dress shoes with velcro, but cunningly hidden.

You've almost certainly seen them and not been aware of the velcro. Mine are sort of maryjanes, with a buckle on the strap to adjust the length, and velcro on the underside of the strap so you don't need to re-do the buckle every time you put the shoes on. It's annoying, because (in addition to the velcro snagging stuff) you can't fasten the strap as tight with velcro as you can with a buckle or tie.
