My right hand has hurt for almost 11 years. My left shoulder has hurt for somewhat less than 2. My posture and reflexes have changed quite a bit over the years, in various attempts to protect the right hand or arm. It's all close enough to instinctive that I don't change it on days when the left arm hurts more than the right. I might be able to remember to pick up a bag with my right hand (though half the time that still means putting it down with the "good hand" and picking it up again.) In the flailing moment between losing my balance and hitting the pavement, there's no way I'm going to turn right and reach down to break my fall with the bad hand.
