today's lesson: isolation
Dec. 4th, 2003 08:33 pmThe second sermon I can remember hearing was about the difference between gloves and mittens. The rabbi invited all the children to the front of the room, so we could all see the impromptu hand-puppets explaining about cooperation and fingers keeping each other warm. My little brother poked me, and whispered sagely (well, as sagely as a round-faced 4-year-old could whisper), "I'm getting gloves as soon as they let me. Mittens are for babies."
Yesterday, I was checking out high-tech hand-warming equipment at EMS. In terms of my personal dexterity, I found remarkably little diffence between gloves and mittens. I'd thought gloves would give me an advantage in turning pages, or taking my transit pass out of my pocket and sliding it through the reader, but they really don't. (The critical dex bonus seems to be not having the gear too big.)
The last few days have been bitter cold, and I've been having difficulty with my commute. The bus schedule is suddenly much less reliable than it was in summer, or even in March when I started this job. And when one bus failed to turn up, I could wait another 30-90 minutes, or walk an extra mile or so to take another bus. I'm a lot more distressed about doing that now that it's 15 degrees F, and my ability to cope with the cold seems to be getting worse all the time.
